HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAM

A hysterosalpingogram is a test to evaluate the uterus and Fallopian tubes. With this procedure, dye is injected through the vagina into the uterus. The dye will flow out into the Fallopian tubes and can show a blockage in the tubes, or certain abnormalities in the structure of the uterus. Because an iodine-based dye is used, it is important for you to inform us if you are allergic to iodine or any substance that contains iodine, such as shellfish (oysters, crabs, etc.). After the dye is injected by the radiologist, a series of x-rays will be done.

The x-ray needs to be done between days #6—10 of your menstrual cycle (with day #1 being the first day of your period), which is just after a normal period, but before ovulation. Please call our office when you start your period so that we can schedule the procedure at the radiologist’s office. You will need to have a current authorization from your insurance company before the appointment can be scheduled. If your most recent period does not seem to be normal or is late, please let us know before the hysterosalpingogram is done. This procedure may or may not cause some mild discomfort (cramping) afterward, and usually takes only about 10 minutes to be done. If more than mild spotting or cramping is noticed, please call your doctor.

DO NOT HAVE UNPROTECTED INTERCOURSE AFTER THE FIRST DAY OF YOUR PERIOD BEFORE THIS PROCEDURE!
